2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined game identity.

The president stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the full message from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following several months of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most popular series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

The President
