In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
